After closing for an extensive three-month renovation in late 2016, Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician, A Luxury Collection Resort is back and better than ever with an updated look and new services to captivate the desert-loving luxury traveler.
Here are three reasons why you’ll want to return again and again to the unique Scottsdale resort-within-a-resort.
The room design
After checking in at the guardhouse and taking a winding road through the lush 27-hole golf course and past Four-Star The Phoenician Resort, you arrive at The Canyon Suites, which sits in its own luxury enclave atop a circular driveway. It feels more like arriving at a good friend’s palatial home versus a hotel, with the Canyon Suites’ lounge and its picturesque windows and voluminous ceiling as the focal points.
The backdrop of Camelback Mountain is serene no matter the time of day, and you’ll find a variation of this vista in each of the 60 rooms and suites. The color palette in the units dances between a muted base and poppy hues — the latter appearing in the accessories, such as red chairs or vibrant accent pillows. The works of abstract art draw upon anomalous representations of forms, like a horse’s mane.
A favorite room type is the 1,200-square-foot one-bedroom suite with an amplified terrace, floor-to-ceiling windows, a four-person dining room, a comfortable living area with a couch and a sleeper sofa, 50-inch televisions and a separate powder room. Conceived by Wimberly Interiors, the relaxing vibe of the desert echoes through the indoor spaces.
The Canyon Lounge
Exclusive to The Canyon Suites guests, The Canyon Lounge’s beautiful marble bar plays host to a complimentary gourmet breakfast. Getting the day started with a cup of rich coffee in front of the grand fireplace sets the tone for great things to come. Conversely, there is no better way to end the day than in the same spot with a glass of wine or a craft cocktail and a few tasty bar snacks. The bartenders here have been known to bring the smoky — thanks to a dramatic, domed cocktail smoker — so expect a show with your drink, if you order properly.
The amenities
Want to explore the great Sonoran Desert? The Canyon Suites saves the day with a lending program for hiking gear. Want to explore the great outdoors just beyond your room? Slip out of the lounge and dive into the circular pool with new cabanas and an ultra-comfortable Pebble Tec surface.
A short walk separates the two resorts, and The Phoenician has many don’t-miss offerings such as a daily one-hour meditation in its Four-Star spa complex, The Centre for Well-Being.
After clearing your head, fill your stomach at J&G Steakhouse by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten. You’ll be treated to amazing food with views to match, seeing as how the eatery overlooks both the city and the desert landscape surrounding the property.
