There are suites. And then there are VIP suites. And then, there are the Suites by David Beckham. Having debuted on the top two floors of Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Londoner Hotel in 2021, these 14 suites — the first in Macau to be designed by a celebrity — are in a league of their own.
The accommodations are so exclusive, you can’t even book them on your own. The suites are invitation-only, meaning The Londoner Hotel team chooses when to upgrade guests and immerse them in the tasteful world of David Beckham, where rich leathers and British heritage fabrics, family photography and even hidden whiskey bars await.
After taking a peek inside these special suites, we can attest that they’re a hat trick, combining gorgeous modern design, thoughtful personal touches and time-honored craftsmanship.
A home away from home
Unlike many hotel rooms “designed” by celebrities, Beckham was involved in the process from day one, working with Sands Resorts Macao and the award-winning interior design firm David Collins Studio to bring the project to life.
In 2019, he visited the London studio to explain his vision for the suites. Beckham hoped to create a home away from home — a place he could stay comfortably during his frequent visits to Macau as a Sands Resorts Macao global ambassador.
“We wanted to understand his world so that we could distill and convey this throughout the suites,” says Simon Rawlings, chief creative officer of David Collins Studio. “His appreciation and knowledge of British luxury brands and traditional tailoring really came through [during that meeting].”
Guided by the star’s preferences, the team created one- to three-bedroom suites that felt warm, personal and beautifully crafted. David Collins Studio incorporated nods to Beckham’s family, interests and soccer career, but all done subtly. For example, the green marble bathrooms feature circular shapes and a hexagonal pendant light, a quiet cue to Beckham’s illustrious career on the pitch.
“Our interaction with David was frequent and substantive, reflecting his active involvement in the design process and his keen attention to detail,” Rawlings adds. “He took a keen interest in furniture and fabric selections, as well as choosing some of his son Brooklyn’s photos for the walls. And, of course, with his name attached to these suites, they had to be perfect.”
A glamorous first impression
The effortlessly chic atmosphere begins on the ground floor, even before you enter the suites. As you approach the private elevator bank, luxurious wood-paneled walls and pops of teal velvet and brass fixtures set the tone for a sophisticated stay.
Each suite is marked by glossy lacquered doors adorned with a personalized crest and brass door knockers, recalling grand London townhouses. The entryway feels posh yet homey with monochrome marble tiles and vibrant contemporary art.
The suites are laid out more like apartments than hotel rooms, with distinct zones that feel equally functional and aesthetically cohesive to create a relaxing residential atmosphere. At the heart of each suite, which ranges from 1,216 to 3,208 square feet, you’ll find an open-plan living room complete with a velvet L-shaped couch and a dining room crowned by a cubic chandelier.
There’s a separate entertainment room with a massage chair, plus a main bedroom featuring DB-monogrammed pillowcases, hand-tufted carpets and contemporary artwork. The adjoining green marble bathroom invites you to unwind in the deep, circular tub as long as you like.
Room after room, you can see Beckham’s fingerprints on many details. For example, he helped choose the suites’ two distinct color palettes, which come in his favorite colors: racing green and navy.
Beckham even selected some of his favorite artwork to hang in the suites, including black-and-white candids from family trips, historic soccer photos and artwork by Peter Thomas Blake, a prominent English pop artist who co-created album sleeves for The Beatles and The Who.
Tailored to Beckham’s taste
Known for his impeccable style, Beckham deeply appreciates traditional men’s tailoring, and you’ll get a sense of his sartorial sensibilities throughout the spaces.
In the dressing rooms, David Collins Studio chose classic houndstooth and pinstripe-patterned fabrics as wall coverings in reference to Savile Row tailoring and built custom niches to provide dedicated spaces for men’s accessories.
Meanwhile, a grooming station features a leather barber’s chair and an illuminated mirror that will make you feel like a star. And in the living room, Beckham’s love for the quintessentially British heritage shoe brand Church’s gets a nod with elegant broguing details along the sofa’s leather back.
Only the finest craftsmanship would do when sourcing fabrics and furniture for Beckham’s suites. As such, David Collins Studio enlisted several British talents to meet the soccer star’s sky-high standards. Irish artisan textile designer Jude Cassidy made ivory and gold drapes for the living room, while British artist Emma Peascod crafted bespoke cocktail tables in verre églomisé glass, which produces a mirrored finish.
“David’s knowledge of British craftsmanship is exceptional,” Rawlings says. “He loves George Smith furniture, armchairs specifically, so we made sure to include these. The suites really do convey his style and home comforts.”
But some features are just for fun. The largest of the 14 suites is home to a secret bar hidden behind a disguised door in the living room. Inspired by bars at Five-Star The Connaught and Five-Star Claridge’s, also designed by David Collins Studio, this clandestine corner has all the makings of a distinguished whiskey bar.
Open the doors to reveal plush leather barstools, walnut wood paneling, marble bar tops and crystal-cut glassware. Of course, a few of Beckham’s favorite whiskies are also on hand, so you can fully embrace the celebrity’s luxurious lifestyle.
