Hyatt’s design-savvy brand, Andaz, opens the doors to its ninth hotel today (though you can officially make reservations starting Nov. 3) with the debut of Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht. The newest kid in the Jordaan district — and the second Andaz hotel in Europe — was designed to reflect a modern viewpoint of Dutch history and culture by Marcel Wanders, the inventive Dutch mind whom The New York Times dubbed the “Lady Gaga of the design world.”
With Wanders at the helm, the new Andaz spotlights cutting-edge design, including the world’s largest hotel video art collection displayed on screens throughout the 122-room space. The Amsterdam hotel shot for the stars by having a six-story lobby with a sparkly, planet-filled ceiling — it looks like you’re gazing at the night sky — that’s aptly named the Observatory.
Andaz Amsterdam also pays homage to the vibrant city’s distinct history and melting-pot culture — its home is in the original exterior of the Public Library of Amsterdam, after all. Since Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most bike-friendly cities, Andaz guests are welcome to hop on one of the hotel’s rental bikes and pedal off for a lesson in the past at the nearby Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Anne Frank House, or simply ride along the Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht canals.
The new hotel follows Andaz Liverpool Street in London as the second European outpost. Next up is another stateside location: Andaz Maui at Wailea, which is set for a mid-2013 opening.
