The Cayman Islands are once again set to be awash with scurvy dogs as the 35th annual Pirates Week nears its November 8 kickoff. Eleven days of celebration will begin with a steel pan competition on Thursday and, on Friday night, a fireworks display, the crowning of the Festival Queen, an opening street dance and a food festival.
While the entire festival run offers a diverse lineup of aquatic-themed events — everything from a 5K sea swim to underwater treasure hunting — the first Saturday will truly set the scene with a mock pirate invasion. The salty crew of two sailing vessels will hit shore in George Town harbor and storm the town, capturing the governor in the process.
In addition to the good-natured pirate fun, a series of Heritage Days will take place in various towns throughout the islands, including in George Town and Bodden Town. Each location’s day will feature unique events that display the particular area’s regional flair.
