If you’re ever in the mood for an Adironondacks vacation that consists of the great outdoors, some pine-scented nature and plenty of activity, consider a retreat to Whiteface Lodge Resort & Spa. With a host of daily activities (bowling, fishing and ice skating) and an impressive array of amenities (a movie theater, tennis courts and an ice cream parlor), this cozy Adirondack escape lets you do as much or as little as your heart desires.

      The Canoe Club

Lodgers who find themselves at this upstate New York resort during the warmer months will have access to the Canoe Club, an exclusive beachfront facility. Shuttls are on call to ferry you two miles to this private beach on Lake Placid, where you’ll have access to games and a fleet of watercraft.

You’ll also have magnificent views of Whiteface Mountain and the entire lake, a gorgeous body of water ringed with spectacular camps and pristine, tangled forest populated by loons, osprey and other wildlife. Along with canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding, water equipment can also be reserved for tubing and waterskiing.

There’s ample space for picnics, while wine and cheese tours or sunset cruises can be organized, too. From noon to 5 p.m. each day, the Canoe Club’s bar and grill serves up items like burgers, chicken wraps, grilled shrimp po’ boys and ice cream treats. The bar offers local drafts, including seasonal flavors from Lake Placid Pub & Brewery, an assortment of bottled beer, a half dozen wines and cocktails that range from margaritas and piña coladas to bay breezes (with locally made vodka) and sangria.

The lodge’s guests are also invited to the Canoe Club for buffet-style barbecues, campfires and extended hours on Tuesday and Sunday evenings.

      Year-Round Excitement

If canoeing and cocktails don’t entice you, the lodge also provides mountain biking at the Olympic Sports Complex during the summer and fall; trout fishing in Lake Placid; three premier golf courses in close proximity to the resort; and rock climbing and whitewater rafting through the Adirondac Rafting Company (April through October).

There are even four major sports venues (such as the Olympic Jumping Complex and Bobsled Experience) you can visit for scenic views of Adirondack Park.

Also, guests who stay at the property any time of the year can expect to have access to the luxury lodge’s 24-hour fitness center — just in case a full day of hiking, horseback riding, shopping and pampering at The Spa at The Whiteface Lodge isn’t enough.

      Winter Wonderland

While the spring and summer are tremendous times to visit Whiteface Lodge, this rustic playland shines brightest when the mercury is at its lowest. As you’d expect, the lodge has an entire winter schedule loaded with outdoor and indoor fun.

When you aren’t perfecting your triple lutz at the resort’s indoor ice-skating rink, tackle terrain for every level of skier, snowmobile through the wooden trails of Lake Placid, snowshoe along the Adirondack Mountains or even sleigh ride at the Adirondack Equine Center. (Don’t worry, blankets and hot cocoa will greet you there.)

Dog-sledding excursions are also available. And when Mirror Lake freezes over, there will be much tobogganing down an icy chute onto the lake.
