Austin is home to many things: the University of Texas at Austin; a killer music scene, which is celebrated annually during the South by Southwest Festival; a fantastic food culture; and countless options for outdoor activity. The Lone Star State capital also happens to be the place of residence for Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey.
Named one of the Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the world in 2014, McConaughey has made no secret of the fact that he enjoys driving a Lincoln. You’ve probably seen him starring in a series of Lincoln Motor Company commercials, or you may have even caught his 2011 movie The Lincoln Lawyer. (True story: he kept the vintage Lincoln Town Car from the movie for himself after filming wrapped.) This fall, the car brand and McConaughey debut a new series of digital and broadcast spots filmed by director Gus Van Sant. The commercials represent a cinematic interpretation of the campaign’s “the feeling stays with you” theme.
Forbes Travel Guide briefly caught up with charismatic actor at a recent Lincoln-sponsored event to learn more about the special feelings he gets when he’s in Austin with his family.
Where is the first place you drive to in Austin?
I really like to be behind the wheel and be in the driver’s seat so, when I am not working, I like to go on road trips; that’s the first thing I did when I got my Lincoln. For quick trips near Austin, I recommend driving to Gruene, Texas, a picturesque, historical town with buildings dating back to the 1800s; the Hamilton Pool Preserve, a protected natural habitat featuring a jade green pool and waterfall; or The Salt Lick in Driftwood for a great local barbecue experience.
Where is a great spot for an outdoor workout in Austin?
A run around Zilker Park and Lake Austin, or hit up the steps of Mount Bonnell.
What are fun things to do with your kids around Austin?
I always enjoy going to volunteer in the community with the kids from the just keep livin Foundation, whether we’re helping a local food kitchen or packing supplies for troops overseas. It’s good to give back.
What do you consider a quintessentially Austin experience or place that you’d recommend to someone planning a trip to Austin?
Most definitely taking in a UT football game followed by dinner at one of our amazing barbecue joints.
What place would someone most likely have a Matthew McConaughey sighting or see a picture of Matthew McConaughey on the wall?
If I tell you, then it will be too easy to find me.
