Often lost in New Orleans’ revelry-filled haze is the fact that the city is steeped in U.S. history. One place that hasn’t forgotten about its civic roots is Hotel Mazarin, a NOLA boutique property that’s celebrating the 198th anniversary of one of the city’s turning-point moments, the War of 1812’s Battle of New Orleans, with a military-themed dinner and overnight package Jan. 10 through 12.
When you arrive in the Big Easy, you’re picked up by hotel transportation and welcomed with a deluxe commemorative gift in a premium room. That evening, there will be a five-course meal — expect oyster croquettes, rabbit sausage and beef tenderloin mignonettes on the menu — prepared by executive chef Agnes Bellet. On-the-ground reconnaissance tells us that Generals Andrew Jackson and Edward Pakenham impersonators will make appearances at the function.
While that initial dinner may be a highlight of the weekend, it’s far from the only one. On Friday, there’s a haunted history tour through the French Quarter on the dossier. And on Saturday, there will be a Battle of New Orleans reenactment at Chalmette National Battlefield’s Beauregard Plantation. By the time your history lesson ends with dinner at MeMe’s Bar and Grille and a lantern-light tour of the battlefield, you’re left with plenty of war stories to share when you get back home.
