Restored Pullman Trains Take Travelers Back To A Simpler Time
By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Alex Skjong

      November 27, 2012

Taking the bygone romanticism of railroad travel and injecting a multimillion-dollar restoration project into it, Pullman Sleeping Car Company is calling all aboard for its recently launched luxury travel experience, Pullman Rail Journeys.

In early November, six inaugural trains clicked and clacked from Union Station in Chicago to the Amtrak Station on Loyola Avenue in New Orleans, allowing passengers to spend the night taking in the full extent of the nearly $10 million shine applied to each Art Deco car. Old heavyweight cars from the 1920s and ’30s and lightweight ones from the ’30s and ’40s were all restored with the finest attention to details, capturing the essence of each era.

While Pullman Sleeping Car Company has taken all of the necessary measures to ensure historical accuracy — including a buffet car and one with a lounge — modern amenities also were added to provide convenience during the nearly 20-hour journey. New wheels, undercarriages and suspensions smooth out any bumpy rides the cars once had. Air conditioning and new shower stations guarantee comfort while in-car Wi-Fi allows you to stay connected every railroad spike of the way.

But if the sheer thought of venturing back to a simpler time of travel weren’t enticing enough, book rides for December 12 or 19 to enjoy the Papa Noel package. The New Orleans holiday experience includes a round-trip journey on the iconic train, a one-night stay at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside and Creole dinner at famed Commander’s Palace. Talk about starting your holiday season off on the right track.
