When traveling through Auckland, ignore the usual kitschy souvenirs in favor of something authentically local.
You’ll probably notice a lot of locals wearing a green stone pendant around their necks. This is one of the best souvenirs to have from your trip to New Zealand.
However, bear in mind that, culturally, it is not a good idea to purchase a green stone for yourself. The Maori people believe that this will anger the spirit of the jade. You may be lucky enough to be given one by a New Zealander, or you could give one as a gift to someone else.
If you’re after something for the home, New Zealand has forests of tall kauri trees, which produce a soft wood perfect for carving. Pick up a beautiful kauri piece, either something decorative or practical. We recommend the organic shaped bowls.
Sports fans should not leave New Zealand without a jersey from the All Blacks, the national rugby team.
For a range of creative Kiwiana, some of our favorite stores are the Texan Art Schools dotted around the city. They carry cool artist-made items that aren’t your standard souvenirs. Peruse jewelry, art, homewares and more at the shops.
