Our inspectors visit thousands of hotels around the globe each year. Most high-end properties leave pleasant memories, but some go beyond creative in-room amenities with out-of-this-world extras that make a stay truly sublime.
Ahead of Forbes Travel Guide’s annual Star Awards on February 11, we checked in with our team of incognito inspectors and asked them to reflect on all the hotels they have stayed in over the years and pick the one they would return to on their own dime. From an idyllic South Carolina getaway to a luxurious Sardinian hideaway, these are the addresses our inspectors want to revisit.
Wickaninnish Inn
Vancouver Island, Canada
“The one place I would go back to is the Wickaninnish Inn, a property that captured the wild beauty and soul of the Pacific Northwest. Set on the edge of the Clayoquot Sound and steps from Chesterman Beach, the inn offered an unmatched sense of place with crashing waves, shifting light and ocean mist. The design celebrated its surroundings through warm cedar, stone and expansive windows that framed the dramatic coastline, creating a seamless connection between indoors and out.
“Whether watching winter storms roll in from the comfort of a fireside armchair or walking the windswept beach at dawn, every moment at the Wickaninnish Inn felt grounding, luxurious and deeply connected to nature.”
Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi
“My family has visited five times using Hilton Honors points. From celebrating wedding anniversaries to our babymoon to traveling there with a baby, each stay has been equally special and memorable. In addition to the white sand beaches and turquoise waters, every staff member we have encountered has been exceptionally gracious and attentive.
“The well-appointed villas are spacious, each featuring a soaking tub and a large private pool, and there is a wide variety of dining options offering different cuisines and ambiance along with extensive watersport activities and high-end wellness experiences.”
JW Marriott El Convento Cusco
“JW Marriott El Convento Cusco, a former convent, combined Old World charm with a strong local ambiance, including an open fireplace and Incan artifacts. I had delightful conversations with the local vendors in the charming courtyard that featured lanterns; a fountain; an herb, spice and vegetable garden; and baby alpaca Panchita.
“The property also offered a range of bespoke experiences, including a garden tour and a pisco sour class that I enjoyed with the knowledgeable mixologist.”

Velaa Private Island
Maldives
“It’s the attentive service and truly passionate staff that make Velaa Private Island the one place I would return to on my own dime. That level of genuine care and enthusiasm from the staff elevated an experience to something unforgettable, creating a sense of warmth and genuine connection in the luxurious Maldives. Their dedication, reflected in every detail from personalized greetings to seamless hospitality, makes Velaa feel like a home away from home.”
Six Senses Vana
Dehradun, India
“I would return to Six Senses Vana for a longer health retreat, given the staff’s professionalism and the property’s full commitment to helping guests disconnect and stay accountable to their wellness plans.”
Capella Bangkok
“Capella Bangkok offers an incredibly private and personalized respite from the bustling city. It’s a wonderful spot for a staycation, easy to reach yet rich in cultural experiences.”
Rosewood Schloss Fuschl
Salzburg, Austria
“The property is housed in a historic castle perched above Lake Fuschl, a famous setting for several classic Austrian films. Two days were not long enough to do the area justice, nor to even explore all of the hotel’s halls and its extensive art collection.
“Still, what makes me eager to return the most was the strong focus on using locally sourced foods, wine and spirits, and just how passionate the staff was about sharing them with guests. There’s much more to explore here.”
Ashford Castle
Cong, Ireland
“I would happily go back to Ashford Castle because of its interesting selection of activities, such as kayaking, falconry and clay shooting. I also loved the historical character of this property, with all the comforts of modern facilities and technology.
“The staff created a sunset picture after I asked about the sunset at reception one night, which I display at home to this day. The care, attention and passion of the staff were so powerful.”

Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
Maldives
“The place that blew me away was Kudadoo Maldives. The tiny, private island offered a fully inclusive ‘anything, anytime, anywhere’ experience.
“Luxurious overwater villas, unlimited gourmet dining and water activities were the highlights. The island had such a serene atmosphere that I felt completely isolated and recharged.”
The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel
Edinburgh
“Though my visit was years ago, The Balmoral still stands out in my mind as one of my best stays. The well-preserved and tastefully renovated property was stunning, particularly the genteel Palm Court tea room beneath a glass cupola, and a strong sense of history was everywhere. The staff blended natural Scottish warmth and hospitality and thoughtful, precise service.”
Any Xcaret property: Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Hotel Xcaret Arte, La Casa de la Playa
Cancun and Riviera Maya
“These were the most incredible places, mostly built from materials straight from the Mayan jungle. Staff uniforms were handcrafted from a local company and made from natural materials.
“Lastly, guests had access to some of the coolest theme parks and jungle tours, all seamlessly executed. You wouldn’t think an all-inclusive could be so top-notch, but this one was. I would happily dish out the coin to stay here again.”

Argos in Cappadocia
Turkey
“I would definitely go back to Argos in Cappadocia — this destination was simply stunning. My room was cozy and homely. Each morning, when I opened the curtains, I was greeted by a breathtaking view of countless hot air balloons floating across a pink sunrise sky. The property itself is built within ancient caves, blending authentic local heritage with refined design.
“Every detail reflected the region’s traditional charm, from handwoven Turkish carpets and wrought-iron chandeliers to a beautifully presented breakfast buffet adorned with colorful ceramic dishes. Argos combines comfort, culture and natural beauty, creating an experience that feels both timeless and unforgettable.”
Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
“The resort was on a pristine private island, and the rooms were beautifully designed and overlooked the beach and crystal-clear water. What really made it memorable was the staff. I ended up playing paddle tennis with the tennis pro, yoga instructor and general manager, who later came to chat with me before departure. He was so genuine and friendly, and his passion stood out. My butler was also sweet, and he drove me all over whenever needed.”
Hotel Esencia
Riviera Maya
“I would love to return to Esencia, a truly unique property. The experience felt highly personalized and exclusive throughout my stay, with my butler attending to every need.
“The variety and quality of the food were exceptional, and I particularly appreciated the private lagoon, which offered opportunities for paddleboarding and swimming with manatees. I also valued the complimentary access to the spa amenities, including the steam room, dry sauna, hot whirlpool and cold plunge. I departed feeling revived and refreshed.”

Park Hyatt London River Thames
“I would return to Park Hyatt London River Thames again for its beautiful views and exceptional comfort. My room featured large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Thames and the city, creating a mesmerizing scene both day and night.
“The modern interior design made me feel instantly at ease, while the spacious fitness center and luxurious spa facilities added to the overall sense of sophistication and relaxation. It’s an excellent place to enjoy contemporary elegance and panoramic London views.”
Hotel Cala di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Costa Smeralda
Sardinia
“I would gladly return to Hotel Cala di Volpe for its authentic Italian flair and signature Porto Cervo style. The traditional architecture, tranquil atmosphere and variety of restaurants created an ambiance that was both refined and deeply relaxing. The terrace bar, sparkling bay and private beach elevated the sense of exclusivity, offering the perfect setting to enjoy the Sardinian coastline.
“Dining here was a true experience; the tableside service evoked the charm of classic Italian hospitality, making every meal feel special. Hotel Cala di Volpe captured the essence of timeless Italian luxury, where tradition and sophistication come together effortlessly.”
Montage Palmetto Bluff
Bluffton, South Carolina
“I would love to return to Montage Palmetto Bluff. The setting was idyllic, and the service was top-notch. At home, my family has adopted the hotel’s daily ‘porching’ hour — a complimentary afternoon snack offering — and has embraced the chance to slow down and enjoy the day.
“Biking and moving about the property and its surrounding private community felt like stepping into a movie, as it was all so picturesque. I will never forget going out to the docks one morning and watching the most spectacular sunrise over the estuary as dolphins popped out of the water. Overall, the value of the stay was very reasonable, and the setting makes for a great location for a large family gathering with its various accommodation sizes.”

Nemacolin Resort
Farmington, Pennsylvania
“I would definitely go back to Nemacolin. The hospitality was top-notch, with staff seemingly anticipating guests’ needs before they had the chance to speak up. I especially appreciated the private, guided zoo tour, in which the driver offered to take pictures of the guests in front of the animals, as well as the impressive array of amenities, including the private air hangar, ski slopes, Woodlands Auto Toy Store and the infinity pool with live music at The Peak.”
Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection
Los Cabos
“I would return to Chileno Bay in a heartbeat for the bright, spacious rooms with spectacular ocean views and indoor/outdoor bathrooms, as well as the highly personalized, anticipatory service — think aloe ice blocks presented at the pool to soothe sunburn, a floating pool bar that delivered the resort’s signature El Chilenito cocktail to guests while they swam and doting staff who greeted guests like old friends.”
Silversea’s Silver Origin
“The ship hired a majority of crew from the Galapagos and other parts of Ecuador, and they were exceptionally warm and knowledgeable about the location. The expedition crew was outstanding. The facilities were luxurious and specifically designed for use in the Galapagos, which meant that there was no absence of wildlife-viewing opportunities, even from the ship.”
Nobu Hotel Los Cabos
“Nobu Cabos is the one place I would happily return to at my own expense. The property was stunning, aesthetically refined with a clean, modern design that blended seamlessly into the natural landscape. The exceptional location offered a constant ocean breeze and breathtaking views, along with multiple pools. The guest room felt inviting and thoughtfully curated, striking that balance between comfort and understated luxury.
“The staff’s warmth and genuine hospitality created a welcoming, elevated atmosphere. Overall, it was a place that felt both inspiring and restorative, and the kind of getaway worth returning to again, even without an expense account.”

Six Senses Douro Valley
Portugal
“Six Senses Douro Valley offered creative dishes and beverages inspired by its garden, spectacular views, manicured grounds and outstanding thermal facilities, which included five types of heat therapies.”
Capella Ubud, Bali
“The one place I would go back to would be Capella Ubud, Bali. The resort was on the slopes of a valley amid a rainforest, with shopping, sightseeing and activity options accessible from the property. The hotel also had a strong sense of place and distinguishable aesthetic features throughout. Adopting a camping concept, the hotel had individually themed cabins that allowed guests to be surrounded by nature while enjoying modern, luxury comforts.”
“One of the places I would gladly return to is Capella Ubud. The entire resort was nestled within the jungle canopy, which offered stunning views of the river below and the surrounding rice terraces. It was safari-camp-meets-luxury-retreat infused with thoughtful Balinese accents, which created a true sense of place.
“The storytelling began from the moment of arrival, where the ‘culturist’ performed a welcome ritual and gave me a wooden walking stick and a camp survival kit containing a resort map, sunscreen, mosquito repellent and other camping essentials. My tent continued that narrative with a camp-style trunk minibar and antique furniture.
“The food was another highlight, and I appreciated the resort’s effort in sourcing ingredients locally and growing fresh produce in its own organic garden. Capella Ubud was a luxury sensory jungle retreat where design, service and nature all came together to create something unforgettable.”
Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, Anguilla
“Set right on the shores of one of the Caribbean’s best beaches, guests stay in self-contained, whitewashed Moorish villas with private beach butlers. There’s great dining, tennis and nightly champagne sabering.”

Airelles Courchevel, Les Airelles
French Alps
“Les Airelles had an incredible breakfast and a superb lunch buffet with mountains of Gillardeau oysters, a fresh pasta station, about 20 varieties of cheese and meat and seafood stations with duck, scallops, bone-in ribeyes, lamb chops, octopus and more.
“Excursions, such as snowmobiling and horse and carriage rides, were included. The pool area was luxurious, and the game and arcade rooms, complete with popcorn machines and miniature gourmet ice cream pots, were not just heaven for kids. Not to be forgotten were the high-end gifts and amenities in the guest room, including a bottle of Dom Pérignon, branded pajama sets, toiletry bags, sweaters and jewelry organizers.”
The Paiza Collection at Marina Bay Sands
Singapore
“Loved the sunrise view from the room’s balcony, luxurious in-room amenities, exclusive food and beverage offered at the Paiza Sky Residence, lovely butlers, Rolls-Royce limousine service and thoughtful souvenirs.”
Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills
“I would return just for the carbonated onsens beside the indoor pool with its sweeping city views, and for the daily cocktail hours at the great room lounge, where a 16-foot fireplace rises beneath soaring ceilings. The many windows of the hotel framing a breathtaking panorama of Tokyo Tower would also make me excited to come back.”
Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel, Cusco
“Palacio Nazarenas was my favorite. The staff there cared so deeply and was so proud of Cusco. The property did an amazing job at showcasing local artists and products. It was an old Inca castle and later a nunnery and filled with such rich history.”
Maroma, A Belmond Hotel, Riviera Maya
“Maroma is on a beautiful beach and filled with bespoke furnishings, decor and fixtures made by local artisans. Local culture is celebrated at every turn, including the Mayan incense welcome ritual and in the food and beverage offerings, like the fresh tortillas made daily by the beloved Tia Dalia, who has a work station in full view of the main dining room and greets guests as they enter for breakfast.
“The walking paths of the grounds wind through lush jungle vegetation and offer interactions with wild animals that are unafraid of humans, like coatis, iguanas and the stingless maroma bees. The serene environment is reflected in the complimentary wellness activities, like the classes in the spa’s apothecary room, meditation rituals performed in the labyrinth and sustainability walks.
“However, the true stars of the show are the staff members. Their warmth and genuine care offered to guests, along with the thoughtful personalization throughout the stay, were exceptional and worth a return trip.”
