Where To Spend New Year's Eve In New York City
By Forbes Travel Guide Correspondent Caroline Patek

      December 14, 2011

New Year’s Eve may still feel like a ways off, but now is the time to secure your plans. Anyone who’s ever watched the ball drop on TV knows that New York City is where the holiday action takes place — but you don’t have to fight the crowd in Times Square to experience a quintessential New Year’s Eve. Here are three Big Apple hotels that are ringing in 2012 with luxe activities:

      The Plaza Hotel

      1. The Plaza Hotel. With package rates starting at $2,012 (and a minimum stay of two nights), here’s what you’ll get: luxury accommodations for two in a guestroom or suite; two keepsake crystal champagne flutes; a New Year’s Eve dinner for two at The Plaza Food Hall by Todd English, The Rose Club or The Champagne Bar; and a $200 spa voucher redeemable for products and services at the wine-centric Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa.

Ballroom at Mandarin Oriental, New York

      2. Mandarin Oriental, New York. You’ve got three options here: Celebrate in MObar and Lobby Lounge with dancing, hors d’oeuvres, party favors and a toast at midnight; feast on contemporary American cuisine at Asiate, which has floor-to-ceiling views of the city; or step it up a notch at the New Year’s Eve Gala, a black-tie event where you can dance the night away in the hotel’s 36th-floor ballroom. Want to sleep it off at the hotel? Get a New Year’s Eve package with a two-night stay and tickets to the gala; rates start at $2,725 per night.

      Lobby at Trump SoHo

      3. Trump SoHo. Fashion lovers everywhere will appreciate the hotel’s chic New Year’s package. Before heading out for the night, you’ll get a consultation with a Rent the Runway stylist, who will hook you up with a designer dress rental. The package also includes hair and makeup services, transportation to your evening’s festivities in the hotel’s house car, breakfast and spa treatments for two, and a penthouse suite. Rates start at $9,500 for two nights.
