For years, Cabo San Lucas has been a paradise preferred by well-heeled travelers for its diverse mix of high-end hotels, fine dining and, of course, 350-plus days a year of sunshine. But in case you needed another excuse to visit, the area’s newest luxury resort brings a dose of modern glamour and a rare swimmable beach to Los Cabos.
Well perched in “the corridor” (the area between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo), the new Montage Los Cabos is the brand’s sixth hotel and its first international property, joining favorites like Forbes Travel Guide Five-Stars Montage Deer Valley and Montage Kapalua Bay in Maui.
The property officially opened on May 31. We stopped by to bring you three things you need to know before booking your trip:
The Rooms and Residences
Montage Los Cabos feels sprawling yet intimate, offering 122 rooms and 52 residences in casita-style pavilions that edge gradually up the hill that the resort is built into, ensuring ocean views from nearly every room — even base-level Coastal View units afford a good glimpse of the water.
In keeping with the property’s desire to incorporate the desert surroundings and highlight the beautiful oceanfront, floor-to-ceiling glass walls slide wide open to expansive patios, where you can enjoy the views and ocean breezes. Keeping with the calming theme, décor is neutral in tone.
Starting at nearly 900 square feet (more than double the size of many hotel rooms in the region), accommodations have amenities like freestanding soaking tubs and indoor/outdoor showers, as well as fresh fruit. Residences, also available for rental, have full kitchens.
The Dining
Resort guests and area visitors alike will flock to Mezcal, the Montage’s new signature restaurant. Dishing out creative interpretations of Mexican classics, like crispy pork belly tacos and octopus tiradito, the restaurant boasts gorgeous handmade tile floors and chic bronze accents and fantastic views over the pools to the sea.
The oceanfront Marea serves three meals daily using Baja-inspired ingredients and makes for an excellent casual dining option.
But perhaps our favorite is the grab-and-go market and gift shop Paletas, delivering everything from coffee and sandwiches to authentic housemade paleta, traditional Mexican ices made with fresh fruit.
The Activities
Sitting right on Santa Maria Bay, Montage Los Cabos provides such spectacular vistas of the sparkling waters that you might think that you’re in the Caribbean or Hawaii rather than coastal Mexico. A pristine horseshoe of soft sand surrounds calm, crystal-clear ocean, making Montage a true water lover’s paradise with swimmable beaches — a real rarity when most resorts here perch up against dramatic rocks and crashing waves. You can even set sail for a sunset cruise right from the hotel. Three pools, each nestling progressively closer to the water’s edge, also afford a serene way of cooling down.
If you prefer not to laze your days away, take advantage of the Activities Pavilion, a space where you can partake in tennis, basketball, lawn games and more.
This fall, a Fred Couples Signature Course will open, accessible only to members from the nearby residential community Maravilla and golfing Montage guests.
Shopaholics can get their fix with an array of boutiques near the lobby.
And if you want to explore Cabo proper, a dedicated experiences manager will help set up special Baja-inspired excursions, ranging from the best spots to try tacos or local coffee to day trips up the coast to areas like Todos Santos, a well-known art community about 50 miles away.
