5 Relaxing Winter Getaways In New York City

New York City is known as the city that never sleeps, but if you know where to look, the Big Apple offers plenty of relaxing retreats. Here are five of our favorite escapes to soothe your soul this winter.

      The St. Regis New York
Founded more than a century ago by John Jacob Astor IV, this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star enclave is a sanctuary if you’re looking for bespoke service. Extravagant guest rooms boast crystal chandeliers, silk-covered walls and Italian marble bathrooms.

And with so much to do right at the hotel, there’s almost no reason to leave. Sip drinks at the legendary King Cole Bar (the birthplace of the bloody mary), enjoy afternoon tea service in Astor Court or sign up for the Gingerbread Workshop, where you can decorate your own sweet masterpiece on December 15, 16, 22 or 23.

For the relaxing yet quintessential New York night out, head to celebrity chef Charlie Palmer’s more casual Liberty Room at Aureole for a pre-theater meal. You can’t go wrong with anything on the three-course prix fixe menu, but our favorite dish is the sea bass.

After dinner, stroll over to Nederlander Theatre to see the latest classic film to be brought to stage, Pretty Woman. To miss this fun and romantic tale would be a big mistake.

      The Beekman, A Thompson Hotel
Nestled in Lower Manhattan, this architectural gem oozes historic elegance reminiscent of yesteryear. The lobby features Persian rugs, Victorian wrought-iron railings, eccentric décor and a nine-story atrium flooded with natural light from its skylight. The entrance is even grander during the holiday season, when it’s covered in garlands, lights and a massive tree.

Guest rooms marry historical details and contemporary style together harmoniously, providing all the charm of a European getaway with none of the hassle. And with restaurants from acclaimed chefs Tom Colicchio (Temple Court) and Keith McNally (Augustine), you’ll never need to leave.

Should you choose to venture out, wait for the weekend, when crowds all but clear out of the Financial District. Take an early morning walk across the Brooklyn Bridge or stroll through Brookfield Place and sample some of the city’s finest quick service at Hudson Eats.

The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park
This Five-Star stunner is fresher than ever after recently completing phase one of a property-wide facelift to its guest rooms, suites, Club Lounge and spa. The hotel evokes a residential feel, allowing you to finally have that Central Park pied-à-terre you’ve always dreamed of.

Pamper yourself at this urban oasis by booking a facial at its Four-Star La Prairie Spa, famous for its innovative approach to skincare. For the ultimate indulgence, we recommend the Platinum Rare or Pure Gold Radiance Facial.

Once you feel refreshed, take the house Mercedes-Benz (available from 3 to 10 p.m.) or a horse and carriage to the iconic Tavern on the Green for a memorable meal you won’t soon forget.

Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, pick up VIP tickets to the newly updated Big Apple Circus (through January 27) just a mile away at the Lincoln Center. Enjoy a limited open bar (specialty cocktail, beer and wine) or purchase circus-themed libations and concessions (glittering cotton candy, maybe?). Then sit back and enjoy a magical experience for the young and young-at-heart.

This Five-Star Big Apple landmark is always buzzing during the winter months. When the legendary, oversized Christmas tree goes up, a festive spirit abounds throughout the property.

Escape the pressure of holiday entertaining and partake in a stress-free feast (Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve) with seasonally inspired menus. On December 25, dive into a yuletide lunch in the hotel’s grand lobby that comes complete with crispy maya prawns, glazed duck, diver scallops and other flavorful fare. Kid-friendly options, such as chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese and chicken fingers, will also be available.

After a day of dining, renew and refresh at Four-Star L. Raphael Beauty Spa with a Dead Sea Detoxifying Body Polish. Keep the good vibes going by heading to Breathe, a luxe, Himalayan salt room that aids in detoxifying the respiratory system and promoting overall wellness for a healthy new year.

The Pierre, A Taj Hotel, New York
Old-World charm abounds at this classic Five-Star property. What may surprise you is that The Pierre is an inviting place to relax — even with tots in tow.

The flagship Taj property in the United States rolls out the red carpet for the tiniest VIPs, giving out special amenities guaranteed to keep them happy, like warm cookies and milk at turndown.

Book the Fall Family Package to get a second room at 50 percent off, plus four gratis tickets to the Central Park Zoo and two complimentary cocktails in Two E Bar/Lounge to keep mom and dad happy, too.

And as all parents know, the most restful trip is one where the kids are entertained. So, if the zoo isn’t enough, take a short walk to check out the new Dreamworks Trolls The Experience, a 12,000-square-foot, immersive adventure filled with fun photo opportunities for your flock.
