5 Stellar Espresso Martinis In Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., is known as the heart of American politics, but it’s also an unexpected hub for some of the country’s most creative cocktail experiences. After all, the political parties must agree on something, right? A unanimous D.C. favorite is the espresso martini — a sweet treat packing a caffeinated punch.

Some of the district’s most prestigious hotels and bars offer a unique interpretation of the espresso martini, ranging from classic renditions to innovative creations. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these establishments promise a delightful experience. Each sip tells a story of craftsmanship, culture and passion — and that’s something both sides of the aisle can agree on.

The St. Regis Washington, D.C.’s decadent creation

The opulent Four-Star St. Regis Washington, D.C. is home to a decadent espresso martini that balances the bold flavor of fresh espresso with smooth vodka and the richness of Van Gogh Espresso liqueur and Kahlúa that’s sweetened with golden milk foam. Its classic, refined perfection is a testament to the St. Regis brand’s commitment to elegance and quality.

Bourbon Steak DC’s elegant espresso martini, two ways

The Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Bourbon Steak DC — one of our favorite places in D.C. to see and be seen — in the Five-Star Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C. offers not one but two twists on an espresso martini. Lead bartender Engidawork Alebachew elevates the standard espresso cocktail with vanilla-bean-infused vodka and coffee liqueur. In contrast, the Buna Flip — buna meaning “coffee” in Alebachew’s native Amharic — is a luxurious mix of Hennessy VSOP, Madeira wine, espresso and a whole egg, topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg. It’s a nod to tradition and innovation in one glass.

A hidden gem at Park Hyatt Washington D.C.

You won’t find an espresso martini on the menu of Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Blue Duck Tavern in Four-Star Park Hyatt Washington D.C. However, it’s a secret treat known only among insiders (until today). Its version features a fresh shot of Compass Coffee’s Emblem espresso roast, vodka, St. George Nolan coffee liqueur, a hint of Baileys chocolate liqueur, simple syrup and a star anise garnish. The restaurant also offers a festive peppermint mocha espresso martini adorned with crushed holiday peppermint bark for the winter.

Give me s’more espresso at Willard InterContinental

The legendary Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Willard InterContinental has hosted celebrities and major political figures for more than 200 years. Resident mixologist Mercedes Cowper does his part to keep folks coming back with his spin on the classic espresso martini this winter. Although the cocktail is served cold, its flavors and styling are reminiscent of toasty fireside s’more. Ingredients include cold brew coffee, Tito’s vodka, toasted marshmallow syrup, graham-cracker-washed Kahlúa and almond milk. (Of course, regular dairy milk can be substituted.) A skewered, lightly toasted marshmallow balanced across the rim of the glass serves as a memorable garnish.

An Amy Winehouse-inspired treat at 1310 Kitchen & Bar

The atmosphere at 1310 Kitchen & Bar — nestled in the vibrant streets of Georgetown — is as invigorating as its cocktails. Proprietor and chef Jenn Crovato whips up a mean Rehab espresso martini, an homage to late English singer Amy Winehouse, as all of Crovato’s cocktails are named for iconic female artists. This creative concoction puts a twist on the classic by blending Tito’s vodka, simple vanilla syrup and Godiva dark chocolate with a robust shot of espresso. It’s not just a drink; it’s a tribute to a musical genius and the art of mixology.
