Not much typifies winter fun like outdoor ice skating and, in Chicago, the only hotel where you can lace up your skates and hit the ice is at the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Peninsula Chicago. The luxury hotel’s 2,100-square-foot outdoor rink opened Dec. 21 and is located on the fourth-floor Terrace, adjacent to restaurant Shanghai Terrace. A winter wonderland backdrop of pine trees and twinkling lights surrounds the rink, which overlooks the Magnificent Mile and the Windy City skyline.
The exclusive ice-skating rink is only open to hotel, spa and restaurant guests, which means that you will have plenty of room glide on the ice. You’ll avoid the crowds typically found at Millennium Park and John Hancock Observatory’s wintertime rinks. When you need a break, snacks like warm pretzels and nuts, and hot drinks such as cocoa, cider and spiced German wine are all available for purchase.
Tickets cost $10 and $5 for children under 12 with all proceeds donated to the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and the Hephzibah Children’s Association. The rink is open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 8 p.m. You can practice figure eights at the rink through March 3.
