Forbes Travel Guide’s Top New England Hotels
      By Correspondent Jaydine Sayer

      October 25, 2012

The charms of New England are many — rich history, fresh seafood, green mountains, craggy coasts, cobblestoned cities — and they’re particularly difficult to ignore this time of year, when summertime crowds are long gone and the thrill of fall is in the air. Quench your thirst for an autumnal New England weekend by checking into one of these lovely hotels.

      Blantyre

Located in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, this idyllic country estate is perfect for those who want a truly peaceful New England getaway. The Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star resort is a romantic retreat dating back to the 1800s, and has large suite-like rooms (some with fireplaces), a formal dining room (jacket and tie required) and an intimate little spa reminiscent of a country cottage.

Despite its location in busy Edgartown, you’ll find a peaceful vibe at this Edwardian-style Martha’s Vineyard inn. The 19th-century décor, manicured gardens, 19 individually decorated guest rooms (with original antiques) and discreet staff lend the charming Four-Star boutique hotel loads of character.

      Boston Harbor Hotel

The ambience at this bustling hotel may not be country-quiet, but it’s New England sophistication at its best. Located at Rowes Wharf, the Five-Star hotel blends Boston’s colonial past with its contemporary present — you can see the historic harbor from many of the spacious guest rooms, revel in the impeccable personal service provided by the staff and dine at the Four-Star, oenophile-friendly Meritage.

      The White Barn Inn

You’ll be near Maine’s rugged coastline and experience a touch of European elegance at this Four-Star Kennebunkport resort where guests are greeted with a cocktail. The Four-Star White Barn Inn Spa uses local ingredients (some pulled from the nearby Kennebunk River) in its indulgent treatments, and the Five-Star restaurant attracts diners from across the state and beyond who want to sample chef Jonathan Cartwright’s regional dishes in an utterly elegant dining room that was converted from two old barns.
