Stepping into Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong summons an atmospheric shift. You are instantly transported to a quiet and intimate oasis, just steps from Central’s honking horns and grinding traffic. Downstairs, Hong Kong’s best-dressed ladies of leisure sip afternoon tea while jet-setting businesspeople strike deals over coffee.

Aimed at stylish travelers with sky-high standards, the hotel ushers you in with warm wood, soft lights and earthy tones throughout the common areas. While its relaxed and refined atmosphere hasn’t changed a bit, the hotel’s 109 spacious rooms and suites saw a massive makeover earlier this year.

Embracing luxury and tranquility, the new rooms feel like a home-worthy apartment. The work of award-winning Hong Kong interior designer Joyce Wang (the creative genius behind Rhoda, Mott 32 and Ammo restaurants) makes The Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s new units feel sleek yet comfortable, urban yet natural.

Each of the renovated rooms overlooks the finance buildings and buzzing streets of Central. However, it’s nothing but calm and soothing inside, thanks in part to a cozy sitting area and neutral shades of cream, beige and brass.

Every detail has been custom crafted, from the bespoke furniture to the bird sculptures hanging above cocoon-like beds, hand-painted silk wall coverings and art deco-inspired fixtures — even the lighting has been dialed down to make you feel at home.

Despite the residential feel, the boutique hotel doesn’t skimp on technology. There are 48- or 55-inch TVs in each room that sync with personal devices and pump out sound through Bose speakers.

Elsewhere about the reinvigorated spaces, unique features catch the eye. Embedded in the wall, a crystal cooling vitrine turns a literal spotlight, like tiny bite-sized jewels on exhibition, on culinary treats delivered from Five-Star Amber restaurant. An elegant sitting area faces a wrap-around wall that separates the living room from the bathroom.

Turn the curved corner, and the wall makes sense. Filled with natural light, an enormous bathroom takes up what must be half the suite. Inside the luxurious oasis, find his-and-her vanities, a walk-in rain shower, separate toilets and the pièce de résistance: the 7-foot-wide bathtub.

To ensure that you make the most of the enormous tubs, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental has also introduced glorious bathtub amenities. The Romance Experience, for example, comes complete with rose petals, chocolate-covered strawberries and a half-bottle of bubbly to go with your drawn bath.
