Every year art lovers from around the globe converge in South Florida for an almost incomprehensible collection of paintings, sculptures and other works. So, saying aesthetes have had December 6, the first day of Art Basel Miami Beach, circled on their calendars for a while would be an understatement. To temper artistic thirsts this year, Mandarin Oriental, Miami is displaying pieces from the fascinating eight-man team Guild in its lobby through November 30.
Guild, a collection of Miami natives in their 30s and 40s, has garnered a reputation around the city for its interesting take on modernist art. The 20-plus pieces the octet has showing at Mandarin keep with the ensemble’s unique approach to stills, landscapes and portraits — Yamel Molerio’s mysterious “Mandarin Girl” will etch itself into your memory — all while also acknowledging the hotel’s Asian roots by using Chinese inks as the chief medium.
Though the showing is complimentary to anyone with a hankering for detailed, creatively ambiguous art, those who stay at the hotel during the exhibit’s run receive a Mandarin Oriental Art Book as a special gift. Room rates start at $359.
