The pastel skies and brightly hued hot-air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey, mesmerized followers on our Instagram account, @ForbesTravelGuide, in January. The destination snapped up our two most popular posts of the month.

To capture the most-liked shot (shown above), photographer Hatice Korkmaz (aka @kardinalmelon) climbed into a balloon. “It was minus 20 degrees and I was almost freezing,” Korkmaz said. “The sun was rising and there were many colorful hot-air balloons over the fantastic snowy landscape. Actually, the view was out of this world, so I could not resist taking photos to freeze that moment.”

The trip marked the fifth visit to the area for Korkmaz, who works as a branch manager at a private bank when she isn’t snapping vibrant photos. “Cappadocia is an area in Central Anatolia in Turkey best known for its unique landscape, underground cities, cave churches and houses carved in the rocks,” she said. “Cappadocia is the region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage. Hot-air ballooning is very popular.”
