5 Ways To Celebrate Cinco De Mayo

Gorgeous spring weather gives us endless reasons to celebrate, and Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is a particularly festive one.

Loosely commemorating Mexico’s victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla, this historic holiday is marked with parades, parties and, most famously, tequila-based tipples.

High-end hotels annually get into the spirit of Cinco de Mayo with colorful cocktails and flavorful fiestas you won’t want to miss. We’ll toast to that.

For a classic taste of Riviera Nayarit with contemporary flair, head for this Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star retreat’s recently debuted Mexican restaurant, Dos Catrinas.

Alongside a menu of street-style fare — try the octopus-stuffed gordita or classic esquites (Mexican street corn) — you’ll not only find a selection of creative pours featuring the eatery’s own signature mezcal but a few tasty Cinco de Mayo-themed tipples as well.

Snag a seat at the bar and try the fruity Catedral (mezcal, Aperol and raspberries) or the aptly named 5 de Mayo (tequila, Lillet Blanc and a twist of orange). No matter which drink you decide upon, don’t leave without hailing the La Churrerita churro cart for dessert.

With its elegant local flair and gorgeous views of colonial San Miguel de Allende, this stylish Five-Star stay provides a prime perch from which to soak up the city’s Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

Before heading out to join the fiesta, though, perk up with the property’s Clase Moka cocktail. This cold-brew creation honors Mexico’s rich culinary heritage with ingredients like chocolate, agave, tequila and a hint of orange to round it all out.

Savor your unique sip from the comforts of 1826 Restaurant’s garden terrace or with a side of skyline views at Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar.

Pair those celebratory drinks with hearty Yucatan-inspired fare at this Four-Star Playa del Carmen retreat.

Stop by Frida’s colorful dining room on May 5 to indulge in flavorful creations, like Mexican chicken with street corn or salmon al pastor, between mouthwatering margaritas.

And thanks to the resort’s all-inclusive format, you can sup and sip to heart’s content — be sure to savor at least one libation by one of the property’s three picture-perfect pools.

For a sweet way to kick off your Cinco de Mayo festivities at this stunning Five-Star San Jose del Cabo resort, park yourself at the sea-facing infinity pool and order up Catrina, a mezcal-based winner that mixes peach schnapps, fresh tangerine juice and agave honey.

If you’d like to take a deeper dive into Mexico’s spirited drinks scene, book a Tequila Sign session, where the hotel’s experts will guide you through a blind taste test of various blancos, reposados, anejos and mezcals to find your perfect blend.

If you’re staying stateside for the May 5 holiday, you can still get a taste of Mexico at this Four-Star lakeside gem.

With the push of a button, you can summon the Austin hotel’s On-Demand Margarita Cart for an ultra-exclusive in-room fiesta. Within minutes, your own private bartender will arrive with all the extras needed to craft cocktails, from premium tequilas and fresh juices to sweet and savory salts and unusual garnishes, all shaken (or stirred) to your exact specifications. Cheers!
