Endless kegs of beer and a citywide party. Oktoberfest, the beer blowout native to Bavaria, offers both and much more. For the official celebration, held in Munich every year, you’ll want to move fast. The festival started September 22 and has its last call on October 7. Expect beer tent after beer tent for a variety of German brews, warm eats and brass bands playing Bavarian folk music. Oktoberfest is undoubtedly one of the best food experiences in Munich and is well worth the trip.
If you can’t make it to Germany on such short notice, visit some U.S. takes on the celebration of suds.
Oktoberfest in Leavenworth, Wash. (about 120 miles east of Seattle), will make you feel like you stepped right into Bavaria while enjoying beer (of course) and live entertainment for the first three weekends in October.
Or you can check out the fest in Fredericksburg, Texas (about 80 miles west of Austin), which offers music, dancing and characteristic German fare from October 5 to October 7.
