There’s no chance for Washingtonians to catch their breath from 2013’s endless rollout of trendy restaurants (dozens on the 14th Street corridor alone) and gallery exhibits. D.C.’s expansion in art and dining is continuing into 2014. Here are our top picks for what to jot into your yearly calendar now.
Dolcezza Gelato Factory, Union Market
The city’s hometown gelato burst onto the scene almost a decade ago with local-ingredient, handmade flavors such as smoked bacon, crookneck pumpkin, and rich Valrhona chocolate. The company’s original Georgetown outpost was an instant hit, and lines ensued. While the new 4,000-square-foot warehouse’s factory — now Dolcezza’s fifth location and its new headquarters — opened in December 2013 for production, the accompanying tasting room and coffee “lab” serving Stumptown Coffee Roasters is on the horizon for public access. Garry Winogrand Exhibit, National Gallery of Art
Renowned photographer Garry Winogrand’s American life photos from 1950 through 1980 can now be seen. The esteemed Winogrand, who took more than 25,000 rolls’ worth of photos, did not develop them all. In his first career retrospective in more than 25 years, hundreds of new photos will add a fresh appreciation of Winogrand’s perspective. Catch the exhibit at the National Gallery of Art before it travels on to San Francisco, New York City, Paris and Madrid. March 2 to June 8
Seriously, who can choose? For fans of hops, local microbrewery Mad Fox Brewing Company will be opening a Euro gastro brewpub, Mad Fox Taproom, by the end of the first quarter in 2014. The new spot will offer its top-shelf suds in Glover Park, complete with full menu items such as a bacon jam burger or duck confit and ham terrine. Then there’s Bell Book & Candle, chef John Mooney’s organic, eclectic American restaurant serving killer cocktails alongside fried oysters, onion soup, and roasted chicken at Union Market, although there’s no official launch date yet. Also scheduled for 2014 — the revival of Forbes Travel Guide Tastemaker José Andrés’ America Eats Tavern (this time at Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star rated The Ritz-Carlton, Tysons Corner), with more of a focus on local items such as oysters, and blue crabs; and DBGB Kitchen and Bar, the long-awaited arrival of Forbes Travel Guide Tastemaker Daniel Boulud in Washington, D.C. with his casual brasserie.
