Fans of the smooth and smoky world of whiskey have a lot to look forward to during upcoming weeks. Whether your taste buds have been fine-tuned to detect precise notes or you’re just dipping a figurative toe into the deep pool of spirits, these events are worth traveling for this season.
Pittsburgh Whiskey & Fine Spirits Festival
Set against the backdrop of the Rivers Casino, this annual festival marks its sixth year on October 26. Though whiskey is takes the lead in the event’s title, those who prefer other spirits will find plenty to taset at this event. More than 300 varieties of gin, tequila, vodka, rum, scotch, cordials and whiskey from a long list of worldwide distilleries will be available for tastings at the casino.
The flagship event of Whisky Advocate magazine, WhiskyFest New York (there are also San Francisco and Chicago events) will take place at the New York Marriot Marquis on October 26 and 27 with an impressive list of libations from A (A. de Fussigny Cognac) to Z (Zacapa Rum). More than a tasting, WhiskyFest New York features a lineup of seminars that touch on everything from whiskey collecting and auctions to master distillers’ newest batches of bourbon and tastings of blends from around the world.
Boardwalk Empire Prohibition Party
The Roaring Twenties return to New York City in Whiskey Park’s time-travel Halloween party on October 27. Come dressed as a gangster or flapper, saunter up to the bouncer and whisper the secret password to gain entrance to the bash. Classic cocktails from the period will be served, including Side Cars, French 75s and the stalwart Old Fashion. A mix of live jazz and rock ‘n’ roll will be played, and revelers will have the chance to try their luck with $50 worth of “funny money” at the underground-style casino.
The Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza
Washington D.C.’s JW Marriott Hotel will set the stage for the next stop on The Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Robb Report tour on October 30. Focusing on single malt and Scotch whiskies as well as other varieties from around the world, the Extravaganza excludes tastings of other spirits besides whiskey. Take advantage of unlimited tastings and a buffet dinner before leaving the venue with an imported cigar that you can enjoy in a post-drinking haze.
With Halloween as the theme, High West Distillery & Saloon in Park City, Utah, continues its series of Whiskey Wednesdays— weekly events featuring a different musical act and whiskey or bourbon tastings — with a performance by the folksy group The Haunted Windchimes. Spend Halloween sipping whiskey and dancing the night away to live old-timey tunes.
