Our “Friday Travel Photo” comes from reader Ashley Pyle of Chicago. Here, she explains her snapshot: We arrived in our second port of call, Basseterre, St. Kitts, on a sparkling sunny day this month. We quickly arranged a city tour with a local company, and soon after, we were treated to the abundant beauty of St. Kitts’ landscape and history. Our first stop included a visit to the Botanical Gardens at Romney Manor, once owned by Sam Jefferson II, the great-great grandfather of Thomas Jefferson. In the 17th century, it was eventually sold to the Earl of Romney, giving the great house its current name. The picture I took captures the pièce de résistance on the grounds — a majestic saman tree nearly 400 years old that spans half an acre. It truly took our breath away as we turned the corner. The ancient tree glows in the sunlight as a little white sailboat can be seen passing in the distance.
