Everybody has a friend of a friend who knows about the latest underground club. In the Maldives, however, things have gotten even deeper in the world of nightlife with the introduction of Subsix, a hot spot within NIYAMA Maldives resort that claims to be the world’s first underwater club.
A mix of ingenuity and James Bond-like imagination, Subsix is something your club-hopping buddies have only seen in their dreams. Using a stairway in the neighboring Edge restaurant, you are taken about 20 feet below the Indian Ocean to a colorful world that’s decked out in hardwood flooring, retro chairs and a fully stocked bar. There’s also a dance floor and DJ booth, where some of the industry’s coolest names — popular British rapper Tinie Tempah helped open the club last weekend — plan to perform in the coming months.
While mixing up the latest tunes is nice for revelers, there’s one reason that stands above all others for checking out the club — its view. Floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides of the structure allow unobstructed looks at manta rays, parrotfish and all sorts of marine life. And if you’re worried about Subsix’s impact on the environment, don’t be. Because of environmental surveys and lessons learned from sister property Huvafen Fushi — a resort said to have the world’s first underwater spa — NIYAMA has a thorough plan in place for its club to boogie in harmony with the indigenous coral reef for many years to come.
