Whether you’re a fit buff, master yogi or brazen wave catcher, Miami’s picturesque beaches and ocean views make for one amazing outdoor “gym.” The sparkling waters, tropical rays and refreshing sea breeze are sublime; you’ll be inspired to go that extra mile. Here are a few of our favorite alfresco workouts with the most spectacular views.
Beach Boot Camps
Celebrity fitness trainers Tracie and Chris Vlaun of V Art of Wellness have developed a following for the high-energy BeachCross Bootcamp they’ve designed for The Miami Beach Edition hotel — one hour of non-stop, high-intensity cardio, strength and core training. At Carillon Miami Beach in North Miami Beach, their hard-core class also includes the option to dip into the water after a serious run, lunge and squat session.
Surf and Turf
Make waves on the glistening Biscayne Bay with stand-up paddleboard yoga held at The Standard Miami Beach, a local fitness mecca. Expect a water nirvana experience like no other in this two-hour balancing act focused on core and yoga moves. Prefer to feel the warm sand under your feet? Now, with the weather beginning to cool, the posh Mondrian South Beach is gearing up to re-launch its weekly Run Club.
Open-Air Yoga
Those in the know, start their day with a sunrise exhale flow yoga class for mind, body and soul at the exhale South Beach spa at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Loews Miami Beach Hotel. Then, come dusk, you can get your om on during full moon yoga at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami just as the majestic full moon begins to rise over the Atlantic Ocean and casts a glow over the Four-Star resort’s scenic Grand Lawn. If you prefer a more challenging option, at the Five-Star Acqualina Resort & Spa, check out the faster-paced, beachfront Budokon and Ashtanga yoga classes created by yogis and gurus from the YOGiiZa lifestyle brand.
Spin, Swish and Swing
If you like cycling, check out aforementioned The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami’s unique spin class under the stars, also held on the night of a full moon on the Grand Lawn. Classes begin just as stars begin to twinkle. Would you prefer to sweat from slicing and serving? At the boutique W South Beach, the concierge team will partner you up with resident tennis pro, coach Federico, to work on your stroke on the roof-top, ocean-view Har-Tru court during SWING class. Of course, if you’d rather do your best Dwyane Wade impression, sign up for a game of SWISH.
Beachfront Barre and Boxing
The rooftop terrace at the Barre Motion studio on Lincoln Road is outfitted with a balcony railing (or “barre”) for an outdoor version of its Signature Motion group barre class. Between exercises, you can check out the buzz of South Beach below. The “Barre-cierge” will also come to you for a one-on-one class on the beach, poolside, atop a private terrace or anywhere else you like. For an equally intense experience, have the elite, super-fit SoBeKick team bring out your inner Rocky with an outdoor beach boxing class — an hour-long series of serious plyo, cardio, and punch-kick combos, minus the gloves and heavy bag, of course.
