Savannah’s coastal locale makes it a great place from which to plan road trips, as the journey will include lots of watery vistas.
Tybee Island is the ideal day trip, at only 20 minutes from downtown Savannah, but with plenty of entertainment to fill a day. Kick things off with a diner-style, funky morning meal at The Breakfast Club, then rent kayaks to check out pristine Little Tybee, a nature preserve with salt marshes, beaches, natural dunes, subtropical forests and wildlife like egrets, herons and bald eagles.
Add a leisurely bike ride that winds throughout the island and have dinner overlooking the ocean before heading to Sting Ray’s or Tybee Island Social Club for live music.
For other nearby day trip choices, the Golden Isles are peaceful and quaint, making them a nice respite. One of our favorites is Sea Island, home to a pair of Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star hotels: The Cloister, a stunning seaside retreat with the only Five-Star restaurant in Georgia and a must-visit spa, and The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club, a handsome property that’s a golfer’s paradise.
Or consider Hilton Head Island, about 45 minutes away and with a dog-friendly beach and lots of premier golf courses. The Inn & Club at Harbour Town has three courses and hosts the PGA Tour’s annual RBC Heritage tournament in the spring. A few celebrity chefs also have restaurants there, including Orchid Paulmeier.
