      4 Sky-High Adventures In Taipei

Striking skylines are a hallmark of Instagram-worthy destinations, and Taipei has one of the most memorable. Taiwan’s capital adds modern skyscrapers, vibrant night markets and lush treetop canopies into a mountainous landscape. And the best way to take it all is from above.

From mountaintop gondolas to the country’s tallest observation deck, here are the sky-high adventures you have to experience in Taipei.

      An Iconic Landmark: Taipei 101

No skyline view of Taipei is complete without Taipei 101, the famed skyscraper stretching up into the clouds above the city’s central business district. Once the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 was overtaken by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa in 2010 but still maintains its status as a prime example of how traditional Asian architecture can be made beautifully modern. The 101-story building emulates the shape of a bamboo stalk, which not only earns it aesthetic points but also helps keep the tower structurally sound. Take a trip to the top for a 360-degree panorama.

To get a bird’s-eye view of the city, follow the signs to Taipei 101’s fifth-floor ticket office. We suggest the Priority Pass skip-the-line ticket to avoid the crowds that can quickly gather around the high-speed elevators, especially on weekends. A 37-second ride brings you to the 89th floor for uninterrupted vistas of the Taipei skyline and surrounding mountains and even a chance for souvenir shopping. You can take the stairs up to the 91st floor for an outdoor vista — just beware that the small viewing platform can get congested, so be prepared to employ a little patience.

While exploring, be sure to check out the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), an 18-foot, 660-metric-ton spherical weight that helps keep the building from swaying during earthquakes. You can see the suspended marvel from an indoor observation deck — complete with interactive exhibits that showcase how it works — and throughout the building in the form of the endearing mascot, Baby Damper.

Those looking to add a bit more thrill (and unbeatable pictures) to their Taipei 101 experience should opt for the newly debuted Skyline 460. Strapped into a harness, you’ll step out onto Taiwan’s highest outdoor observation deck to take in jaw-dropping 360-degree views of Taipei with just the wind, the clouds and a few other adventurous souls as your companions. This VIP experience is only available twice per day, and the coveted tickets sell out quickly. Well-connected concierges at luxury hotels, such as Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Mandarin Oriental, Taipei, should be able to secure a spot for this thrilling adventure.

      A Hiking Highlight: Elephant Mountain

For one of the best photo ops in Taipei, lace up your sneakers and tackle the Elephant Mountain trail. Just minutes from downtown, this short but steep hike rewards your effort with sweeping city vistas, including an unbeatable vantage point of Taipei 101. The well-maintained stair trail takes about 30 to 40 minutes to climb and is moderately challenging, making it accessible for most fitness levels. You’ll also find plenty of places to pause and soak in the scenery.

Time your trek just before sunset, and you’ll witness a breathtaking transformation as golden light spills across the skyline and the city begins to glow. Be sure to bring your camera — this is a top spot for capturing beautiful shots.

      A Natural Escape: Maokong Gondola

Soar above the city and into the mountains on one of Taipei’s most breathtaking adventures: the Maokong Gondola. Starting near Taipei Zoo, this cable car whisks you high into the hills toward Maokong, a charming mountaintop village known for its tea plantations and hiking trails. If you’re up for a real thrill, hop into a glass-bottom gondola and watch the treetops, winding trails and temple rooftops glide beneath your feet.

The approximately 30-minute ride offers scenic views — expect to see lush green hills, serene gardens and sweeping glimpses of the Taipei skyline peeking through the jungle canopy — at every turn. Along the way, you’ll pass the ornate Zhinan Temple perched dramatically on the hillside and feel a world away from the city buzz. At the top, reward your journey with a cup of locally grown Tieguanyin tea, served in open-air teahouses with postcard-worthy views.

An Elevated Experience: Rooftop Bars and Restaurants

To soak in Taipei’s skyline and buzzing nightlife, head to one of the city’s rooftop bars, where sweeping views meet standout cocktails. At the bold WOOBAR atop the Four-Star W Taipei, a fashionable crowd sips locally inspired libations (try the oolong tea-infused Asian Mind) to the beat of lively music, all framed by glittering city lights. For a more refined vibe, INGE’s Bar & Grill on the 20th floor of Four-Star Taipei Marriott Hotel serves upscale American-style fare in a sleek setting. Book a terrace table at sunset for stunning skyline views featuring Taipei 101.

If you’re craving something more casual, Frank Taipei, a quirky lounge above ATT 4 FUN in Xinyi District, delivers creative cocktails and an energetic mix of expats and locals. Or, for a romantic rendezvous, head to The Lounge at Ce La Vi Taipei, where cozy indoor-outdoor seating and front-row views of Taipei 101 make it a great rooftop restaurant for a sunset toast. Whichever you choose, Taipei’s rooftop scene promises a towering night to remember.
