Enjoying Summer’s Last Hurrah In Melbourne

Melbourne is a town that flourishes at any time of the year, but there’s something special about summer in Australia’s second city. The days are hot, the nights are long and the weather begs you to get out and explore. Here are a few suggestions for enjoying the last few weeks of the sensational season.

      Meander the Markets

With a strong focus on food, live music and cultural experiences, there’s a market in Melbourne for everyone. The Suzuki Night Market showcases the fusion of cultures in Melbourne through its many and varied food stalls; enjoy a sangria, soak up some live music and get lost in the ambience. Other hot picks are the Arts Centre Sunday Market for crafts from local artisans and designers; Fed Square Book Market for new and old books; Chinatown Market Day for a foodie fix and St Kilda Market to enjoy the sights and a long walk along the esplanade.

      Do It Outdoors

Take advantage of the warm, balmy nights and late sunsets by enjoying a film under the stars. Outdoor cinemas have become the trendy way to view films in summer, and venues from the inner city to the suburban outskirts of town have embraced this fad. We suggest Rooftop Cinema, Moonlight Cinema at Royal Botanic Gardens and Fed Square Outdoor Cinema. For those wanting to venture beyond the realms of the central business district, head to the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges to the Cameo Outdoor Cinema.

      Take a Unique Tour

There are many ways to tour Melbourne: by bike, on foot, via historic trams and in a hot air balloon. But one of the most unique ways to see it is from sea-level up, in a kayak. Kayak Melbourne offers visitors the chance to point out the major landmarks and sights of Melbourne in an entirely different way.

      Bar Hop

Late nights and summer go hand in hand; it’s too hot to sleep, so why not stay up and enjoy a drink with friends? Rooftop bars are a beautiful way to admire the Melbourne skyline while sipping on a cocktail, or you could opt for a bar on the water, like the popular Riverland, set in old vaults along the wharf.

      Get Lost

Melbourne’s laneways often house the city’s best gems. The grid-like layout of the city means getting lost is quite difficult, but figuratively, it’s the best thing to do. Discover hidden bars, restaurants, shops, galleries and creative spaces. Enjoy the impressive laneway art and don’t be surprised if you stumble upon some busking or live theater.
