Forbes Travel Guide’s inspectors visited more than 1,000 hotels in 60 countries to determine the 2018 Star Award winners announced in February — those Five-Star, Four-Star and Recommended hotels that deliver superior service and facilities.
The company gathers up to 900 data points from every one of those inspections. Today, for the first time, Forbes Travel Guide is revealing details from its trove of data, unveiling its first Verified Lists, which recognize the World’s Most Luxurious Hotels and Spas.
The Most Luxurious hotel winners are the top performers in the standards that focus on sumptuous comfort, as well as extravagant choices and conveniences afforded to guests.
Fifty-eight hotels in 17 countries earned the coveted designation, representing the top 6 percent of 1,017 Star Rated hotels in luxury-related standards. The honorees include 52 Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star and six Four-Star properties.

Macau dominated with four winning hotels: Altira Macau; Nüwa Macau; The Ritz-Carlton, Macau; and Wynn Macau. Las Vegas, New York City and Bali tied for second, each landing two on the list.
Eight properties emerged as double winners, picking up Most Luxurious accolades for their hotel and spa: Dorado Beach, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Puerto Rico; Mandarin Oriental, Singapore; Nüwa Macau; Ocean House, Watch Hill, Rhode Island; The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain, Marana, Arizona; The Ritz-Carlton, Macau; Rosewood Mayakoba, Riviera Maya, Mexico; and Salamander Resort & Spa, Middleburg, Virginia.
The luxury standards used to determine the list encompass considerations such as whether the hotel surroundings are distinctive and convey a sense of place, including exceptional attention to interior design and landscaping; there are thoughtful touches throughout the guest experience, such as fresh flowers in the guest room and a notable gift at turndown; and rooms are beyond simply comfortable, with top-of-the-line bed linens and pillows, luxurious bath amenities, and high-quality robes, slippers and towels.
The featured hotels lavish you at an unparalleled level from the moment you arrive. Las Vegas’ Five-Star ARIA Sky Suites fetches you from the airport in a Cadillac Escalade limousine that uses compressed natural gas, and the round-trip service comes complimentary with a stay in any of its modern, palatial suites.
At Five-Star Rosewood Mayakoba, your secluded suite boasts its own outdoor plunge pool and rooftop terrace, though you just might spend all of your free time in your circular mosaic tub that could easily fit four. But before you slip into a bubble bath, ask your butler to mix up a cocktail using your welcome amenity — local mezcal (made exclusively for the hotel) and fresh ingredients like juice, mint and simple syrup.
Live like royalty at Five-Star Royal Mansour Marrakech, which offers 53 one-of-a-kind riads, or residences built around courtyards. Every design detail drips with opulence, including carved wooden doors, rich brocade curtains and onyx floors. Expect the utmost privacy — a series of underground tunnels ensures that the staff will not intrude upon your stay.
Altira Macau personalizes your getaway. Give the staff at the sleek skyscraper a few days’ notice, and it will embroider towels and bathrobes with the design or monogram of your choosing.
The Lanesborough in London showers you with perks — even basic accommodations come with a butler who will pack and unpack your belongings, pressings and on-demand movies. But our favorite amenity at the Five-Star hotel is that being a guest puts you at the top of the list for entry to the popular Garden Room, a heated alfresco cigar lounge with an walk-in humidor and an impressive collection of high-end Scotches and bourbons.
