As if the call of the tropical lifestyle and year-round sunshine weren’t reason enough to flock to Miami, now you’ll have even more reason to head to South Florida with several new, upscale hotels opening up in Miami Beach along famed Collins Avenue and other swanky addresses in the area. Here’s a peek at three of the most highly anticipated openings.
Metropolitan by COMO, Miami Beach
Centrally located in South Beach, this Art Deco-inspired beauty sits along a promenade known as Miami Beach Drive. Owned and operated by Singapore-based COMO Hotels and Resorts, the March-opened Miami Beach location is the first U.S. outpost for the luxury hotel chain. Inside, Italian designer Paola Navone combines a palette of peppermint greens and dusky grays with surfaces of cool white marble for a contemporary feel, which stand in stark contrast to the 1930s building’s Art Deco exteriors and terrazzo floor in the lobby. From just about anywhere in the light-filled, 74-room hotel, you can enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the Atlantic. The Traymore will be the perfect spot for refined dining, thanks to a menu designed by executive chef Jonathan Lane delivering Floridian fresh catches — think stone crab, Key West pink shrimp and yellowtail snapper. At the beachside pool, you can also enjoy light bites such as brick-oven pizza and crudo while lounging in a private cabana. The Traymore Bar also carries more than 30 artisanal gins, cocktails and champagne. The rooftop COMO Shambhala Urban Escape will deliver a blend of rest and revelry by way of a hydrotherapy pool, wellness juice bar, yoga terrace and a spa specializing in Asian-inspired holistic treatments such as the 60-minute Indian Head massage or the 75-minute COMO Shambhala purify holistic facial.
Located at 2399 Collins Avenue, in the chic Collins Park neighborhood at the previous site of The Perry South Beach Hotel and Gansevoort South Hotel, the world’s second 1 Hotel (a Central Park location is the first) is positioning itself as a nature-focused retreat in the heart of it all. Thanks to interior extraordinaire Debora Aguiar’s dynamic eye for airiness and unfussy lines, the inside of the hotel — see natural whites, earthy browns and reclaimed woods — will have the same timeless aura as the outside of the 406-room gem. Conceptualized by New York-based Meyer Davis Studio, the environmentally friendly property will include four swimming pools, a spa, 600 feet of private beach and 161 private residences that will range from spacious one-bedrooms to penthouses. The property will also feature a yet-unnamed restaurant from Forbes Travel Guide Tastemaker Tom Colicchio, offering locally sourced, farm-to-fork gourmet cuisine. Opening Fall 2014
The Miami Beach Edition
Celebrity hotelier Ian Schrager, who made a splash on South Beach with his hip makeover of Delano South Beach in the ’90s, is back with his latest glam project — hotel-condo The Miami Beach Edition Hotel and Residences. Designed by architect John Pawson, the property will also include 26 high-end residences — nearly half of which are already sold — on the top two floors of the 11-floor, 250-room hotel as well as in a newly constructed tower next door. Each of the residences will be custom designed and boast soaring views of the city, bay and ocean. This is the first stateside Edition, with the others located in Istanbul and London. Already years in the making, the property will feature playful amenities such as a nightclub, a bowling alley, an ice skating rink and a celebrity-only entrance. Outdoor spaces will offer other posh extras such as exclusive private lap and plunge pools, alfresco kitchens, dining areas, fireplaces, lush green gardens and pergolas. Legendary chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will head up the culinary efforts with a modern, upscale restaurant showcasing a locally focused menu amidst a magical beach backdrop. If the yet-to-be-named eatery anyway duplicates the experience had at Vongerichten’s other South Florida restaurant, the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star J&G Grill at Five-Star The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, locals and luxe travelers will be in for a culinary treat.
