If you crave adventure but want to avoid the hassle of arranging a trip overseas, put away your passport and head to Puerto Rico, a little slice of Caribbean paradise that’s a quick plane ride from Florida’s southern coast. Thanks to its tropical climate and year-round warm weather, the island is a prime vacation destination for nature lovers and sun-seekers alike. Adventure No. 1: Try Late-Night Sips and Salsa

Exploring the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan by day is a must for any newcomer to Puerto Rico. Packed with history in the form of abandoned colonial forts and Technicolor homes, the vibrant (if touristy) downtown is an enchanting spot to start your trip. But stick around after the sun goes down to see where the locals hang out.

Founded by a crew of local bartenders who love experimentation, La Factoria is a must-visit for any spirits aficionado. A commitment to locally sourced, made-from-scratch ingredients and an unpretentious vibe has made La Factoria a favorite. Over the last decade, it has cemented its reputation as the heartbeat of Old San Juan. The venue has a line out the door almost every night of the week, especially after 10 p.m., when salsa dancing takes over one of the six unique bar spaces on Sunday and Monday. Rub elbows with locals and visitors alike as you try contemporary riffs on daiquiris and coladas, or sip on the house signature: a lavender-lemonade concoction that goes down as smoothly as its non-alcoholic inspiration.

Adventure No. 2: Swim with Sharks

With its array of sea life and more than 360 miles of coastline to explore, Puerto Rico is a haven for divers of all skill levels. Up the adventurous ante with a private guided tour to a secret location — the tour guide asked us not to reveal our whereabouts to protect the fish — where diving with sharks is a daily occurrence.

Led by local marine biologist Giovanni Guzman, Blue Kings‘ “seafari” tours whisk you away via catamaran to a secluded island and protected bio reserve off the coast of Puerto Rico, where you’ll get the chance to snorkel among a shiver of friendly nurse sharks, as well as a few sea turtles, sting rays and hundreds of tropical fish.

If you’re nervous about being in the water with some of the ocean’s most notorious predators, don’t be. Guzman gives a thorough lesson before you board the boat. He explains the behavior of nurse sharks (whose tiny mouths couldn’t clasp around your hand even if they wanted to bite you) and dispels harmful myths about these incredible creatures. You might even spot a few dolphins scavenging around the shore — don’t worry, your eagle-eyed captain will be sure to point them out along the way.

Adventure No. 3: Soar Through the Treetops

Those looking for an even more heart-pumping adventure should head for the hills of Orocovis, Puerto Rico’s central mountainous region. In addition to hiking, Orocovis is home to another adrenaline-inducing highlight: the longest zip line in America. Visit Toro Verde Adventure Park to fly face-first over the jungle canopy at up to 95 miles per hour on this mile-plus-long course. Once you’ve mastered The Monster (an apt name for this over-the-top experience), keep the thrills going with seven additional zip lines, tree-top courses, a sky bike and climbing walls.

If you’d like to get some fresh air but want to keep your feet closer to the ground, try a tour of the innovative farm Frutos Del Guacabo, which is only about 35 minutes from San Juan. Milk a goat, enjoy a cheese-making demo and explore the family-owned farm with patriarch Efrén David Robles, who will teach you about the property’s sustainable practices and experiments with hydroponics. The memorable visit concludes with a hearty alfresco farm lunch that will satisfy your taste for Puerto Rico adventure.

This Iconic New Orleans Bar Celebrates 75 Years

When you step into Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar, it’s evident why the famed spot tops many tourists’ New Orleans itineraries. A merry-go-round for adults, the icon has been spinning for 75 years, celebrating its anniversary this month. Seated under a canopy decked out with 186 twinkling lights and jester carvings, you’ll slowly revolve in circles while the bartender anchored in the middle pours you classic cocktails.

The Carousel Bar is whimsical, a good time and overflowing with history. It’s this magical mix that has kept Hotel Monteleone, the city’s first luxury hotel, at the forefront of New Orleans’ hospitality scene for more than a century. While The Carousel Bar honors its storied past, the hotel continues to evolve, recently unveiling renovated rooms and more that promise to keep this classic French Quarter grande dame spinning into the future.

The New Accommodations

The Forbes Travel Guide Recommended hotel’s story began with Antonio Monteleone, a cobbler from Sicily who opened the modest 64-room property in 1886. He made it a family business, with the fifth generation now at the helm. The hotel kept expanding over the years, and the latest chapter is the newly renovated Iberville Tower, a two-year, $50 million overhaul.

Dallas interior design firm Collins & Sweezey lightened up the tower’s 160 rooms and 48 suites with a gray and white palette. The centerpiece of each room is a pale gray studded headboard, set against wallpaper that brings the outside in — delicate birds perch on branches while dragonflies and butterflies seem to dance across the wall.

The gray walls and white ceiling have classic wainscotting, while gleaming white stone adorns the desk, vanity and dresser. White marble fills the bathroom, from the brick walls in the glassed-in rain shower to the intricate basketweave flooring. The accommodation is a soothing respite from raucous Bourbon Street, just a block away.

But the Iberville Tower experience extends beyond aesthetics. Guests here enjoy an upgraded stay that blends luxury with authentic local flavor. A personal concierge is at your beck and call, ready to help you unlock the secrets of the city. And what better way to start your New Orleans adventure than with a generous praline, a sweet taste of local tradition that’s waiting for you in the room?

But the best perk for Iberville Tower guests is The Carousel Bar Cocktail Experience. For a $100 fee, you receive access to the bar before it opens to the public, drinks and an hour full of stories.

The Iconic Bar

As the heart of Hotel Monteleone, The Carousel Bar is more than just a watering hole — it’s a whirling stage where New Orleans history, celebrity lore and mixology converge. The scene is set daily: eager patrons line up early before it opens and then orbit the area like a satellite, poised to swoop in on one of the coveted 25 seats when they become available.

The daily private cocktail experience ensures your seat — it’s limited to 24 revelers. When we went, we were the only attendees, which made it even more intimate.

Mike Dupree, the hotel’s affable food and beverage manager and a certified tour guide, took us through the history of the hotel, bar and the city. He shared the mechanics of the bar (it completes a revolution every 15 minutes using 2,000 ball bearings and a bike chain) and little-known facts about its design. Each of the chairs, hand-carved and painted by a former Disney artist, features a different circus animal — a lion here, a zebra there — adding to the fanciful atmosphere.

He also revealed celebrity stories. Liberace was the inaugural performer when the bar debuted in 1949. Louis Prima, a local Italian American jazz singer, got his start at the bar (he went on to sing “I Wan’na Be Like You [The Monkey Song]” in The Jungle Book). Dupree said Prima was the Justin Bieber of his time, with women bringing pans of homemade lasagna in to woo the heartthrob (his daughter Lena assumed his mantle and still regularly performs there). During the city’s popular Jazz Fest, Billy Joel sat down at the piano and gave an impromptu performance. “That’s the magic of New Orleans and the magic of The Carousel Bar,” Dupree said.

As Dupree regales you with stories, you’ll be able to drink along. Sip on the bar’s signature creation: the Vieux Carré. This celebrated cocktail, invented by bartender Walter Bergeron in 1938 when the space was known as the Swan Room, combines Sazerac rye whiskey, cognac, vermouth, Benedictine and a duet of Peychaud and Angostura bitters. It’s a drink that captures the essence of New Orleans — bold, complex and unforgettable.

It’s a heady drink for an experience that starts at 10 a.m., but it is New Orleans, after all, where bars stay open 24 hours a day and people enjoy cocktails in the streets. And when the bar opens to the public at 11 a.m. and visitors clamor for a spot, you’ll already have your seat, ready for another round.

The Literary Heritage

This historic hotel and its bar are favorite haunts for illustrious writers. Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway all stayed at the property and used it as a setting in their works.

New Orleans’ own literary vampire queen, Anne Rice, would sequester herself in one of the suites, embarking on marathon writing sessions fueled by room service and the energy of the French Quarter. Truman Capote, with his flair for the dramatic, often claimed he was born at Hotel Monteleone. While the truth is less romantic — his mother went into labor at the hotel but delivered at a nearby hospital — Capote’s frequent visits and fondness for the place are undeniable. His connection to the hotel, like his prose, blurs the line between fact and fiction, adding another layer to the Monteleone mystique.

All of this helped the hotel earn a Literary Landmark designation in 1999 by the Friends of the Library Association (now known as United for Libraries) — only a handful of hotels to receive the accolade.

To pay homage to the great American authors with ties to the French Quarter hotel, the property created Literary Suites. Each classic accommodation is a love letter to a different author who found inspiration within its walls. The Eudora Welty Suite, for example, features photos of the Pulitzer Prize winner and encourages writers to craft their next novel in an office with an oversized desk. Welty herself wrote the short story “The Purple Hat” in The Carousel Bar.

The Food

As morning light filters through the French Quarter, Criollo Restaurant comes alive with the aroma of freshly brewed chicory coffee and buzzing guests. They fill the space for the lobster Benedict — a decadent twist on the classic with succulent lobster meat replacing Canadian bacon, all bathed in a velvety hollandaise sauce — and the irresistible beignets, served with a praline dipping sauce that balances sweet and nutty flavors.

At night, the lights dim and the atmosphere turns more intimate, even with the din of the nearby Carousel Bar. Start with the shrimp, crab and avocado stack, a popular dish with layers of spicy tomato coulis, chilled crab and creamy guacamole crowned with an oversized shrimp. Then move onto the pan-roasted striped bass with jumbo lump crabmeat and a caper beurre blanc or the Black Angus beef tenderloin in a pool of bordelaise sauce and bone butter melted on top. La Bombe is a lovely and refreshing way to end the meal — it’s a mini-baked Alaska, with strawberry, chocolate and vanilla gelati on a chocolate biscuit, all encased in a singed meringue with a cherry topper.

For those wanting dinner and a show, Criollo offers Le Petit Chef. In a separate dining room, you are treated to either a three-course brunch or a five-course dinner, accompanied by a charming 3D animated experience that unfolds on and around your plate. It’s the only restaurant in New Orleans to have this family friendly dining performance.

A Place to Cool Off

Tucked away on the 16th floor, the outdoor rooftop pool provides a year-round escape overlooking the city. It sits among cheerful peach walls and potted palms, and a bar serves icy daiquiris, refreshing Pimm’s cups and other cocktails. When it’s sweltering, you can sprawl on a lounger under a misting fan. And when the weather cools down, you can still swim comfortably in the heated water.

The first private pickleball courts in France, the venues sit alongside a scenic vineyard — so even if the score isn’t going your way, the stunning sights will always prove victorious. You also can admire the view in between matches from the new covered open-air lounge between the courts.

Le Logis brings together passionate pickleball enthusiasts from all over the world to the French countryside for its annual invitational, Dinking in the Vines. The chateau’s seasonal and mostly local food is one of the highlights of a stay. Once you provide a list of allergies and preferences, the chef will come up with tailored meals and enchanting settings. The menu might include thick steaks sizzling on a roaring fire outside near a communal table on the verdant grounds, a formal dinner under the capiz shell chandeliers in the elegant dining room with hand-painted botanical wallpaper or an alfresco lunch on the charming, sun-soaked patio. Vegan fare is a specialty as well.

While the all-inclusive stay includes French country breakfasts, snacks, house wine and spirits and dinners, it’s worth adding on the unique martinis and Gillardeau oysters experience. The nutty-tasting bivalves are among the best in the world, farmed by a family that’s been in the oyster business since 1898.

Savor cognac and more

While Le Logis resides in Cognac, it also has ties to another spirit. Bacardi acquired the estate in 2013, turning it into a VIP getaway for its Grey Goose vodka brand. It’s why the jewel-box bar sits in the heart of the chateau.

Today, master bartender Bastien Gardrat oversees the bar, shaking up cognac cocktails for guests. Don’t miss his complimentary mixology classes, where you can learn how to craft his signature Jasmine Dreams (made in collaboration with Palais des Thés, it features cognac, cold-brew-infused jasmine green tea, vanilla syrup and a touch of lemon) or a cognac Negroni. Gardrat also can show you how to prepare low-ABV cocktails and mocktails.

Of course, if you want to sample the local spirit, Gardrat leads cognac tastings in the living room. You will try five pours from different producers while he shares stories about the region’s cognacs.

Take a side excursion

As much as Le Logis captivates with its turreted tower, private theater and other amenities, the property’s staff is more than happy to set up outside excursions as well. If you want to swing something beyond a pickleball paddle, for example, a round at nearby Golf du Cognac can be scheduled. The estate’s team can also map out a hiking route amid the breathtaking grape vines for you.

But this is Cognac, after all. Behind-the-scenes looks at the eau de vie production process —everything from a distillery walk-through to a private peek at how oak barrels are built — can be arranged. Rémy Martin is just a 14-minute walk away. And if you simply want to learn more about the famed town sitting less than nine miles from Le Logis, city, house and even boat tours around Cognac can also be organized.

Should your curiosity extend even further, day trips to places such as Bordeaux (roughly 82 miles from the estate), Saint-Émilion (61 miles) and the charming coastal village of Talmont-sur-Gironde (38 miles) can be scheduled as well.

It’s not unusual for a boutique hotel to partner with a local gallery to display a rotating array of pieces or for a property to commission new works to unveil in its lobby or garden.

Here, we highlight eight properties that have such amazing art collections they could charge a separate fee to tour their halls.

The Langham, Boston

Art and history collide at The Langham, Boston, a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star hotel with a collection curated by Richmond International. Many of the 268 pieces reflect a connection to the building (the property was once the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston) or the surrounding area’s history. During a 2021 renovation, the hotel worked with the nonprofit Copley Society of Art to commission 60 new pieces, such as Samuel Gareginyan’s abstract portrait John Singleton Copley, displayed in the lobby. Hotel guests are invited to take a self-guided tour featuring videos and recordings of the artists who created the works.

Other pieces include N.C. Wyeth’s Abraham Lincoln mural, initially commissioned by the bank; eight portraits of the bank’s former presidents by Debra Keirce; and a 7-foot hanging wire sculpture of the Lady Liberty coin head by artist Lyle London.

The St. Regis San Francisco

Given the Five-Star hotel’s location between two of the city’s famed museums, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the African Diaspora, it makes sense that it takes its art collection seriously. Everywhere you look in the hotel, from the patio to the lobby, you’ll find brilliant pieces.

Safety is a giant safety pin sculpture by Giuseppe Palumbo in front of the hotel. It represents support and solidarity for the repressed and marginalized. In the reception area, a painting titled Solitude by Randy Hibberd depicts an abstracted city nestled within San Francisco. Gold accents mimic the golden sunlight reflecting off the Bay. In the dining room, a dreamy landscape titled Mountain Mist by Janie Rochfort reflects a unique watercolor style. Rich olives and lighter pinks capture the fluid colors of a San Francisco sunset.

MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

Check out the artist-in-residence program at Sonoma’s MacArthur Place. In partnership with Uprise Art, the Four-Star resort welcomes artists to stay and hosts open studios where they create art and explain their processes to any interested parties. The first resident of 2024 was New York-based abstract painter Eddie Perrote (March 31 through April 5). Painter Mia Farrington (May 19 to 24) and graphic sculptor Dan Covert (July 7 to 12) are next to call the hotel their temporary homes.

Art created during the residency becomes a permanent part of the hotel’s collection. MacArthur Place also partners with Aerena Galleries, a wine country gallery representing an impressive roster of emerging and established artists. Sculptures from Aerena, like a giant corkscrew by David Tanych and bronze wolf by Sharon Loper, are placed throughout the property.

The Aurora Inn

Philanthropist and entrepreneur Pleasant T. Rowland’s personal art collection is on display at this Upstate New York Four-Star charmer. Over 250 pieces hang throughout the guest rooms, hallways, restaurants and bathrooms, including works by Wayne Thiebaud, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Romare Bearden and Chuck Close. The entire collection is accessible thanks to an 80-page booklet showing each piece’s location on the campus.

Additionally, there are a number of pieces at the spa, from a series of florals, Big Blooms by Paul Lange, to a collage that makes up an Apple Tree by Jennifer Bartlett, that it feels like a modern museum.

HALL Arts Hotel

Appropriately sitting in the Dallas Arts District, Forbes Travel Guide Recommended HALL Arts Hotel features the extensive contemporary art collection of owners Craig and Kathryn Hall. The hotel largely works with a clean, modern aesthetic, with white walls everywhere, making for a fantastic way to showcase the art.

Lava Thomas’ Resistance Reverb: Movements 1, a grouping of 600 pink tambourines, hangs in the lobby. It’s a gorgeous, glittering piece with fragments of political speeches excerpted from voices of women’s resistance spaced throughout, ranging from Sojourner Truth’s 1851 “Ain’t I a Woman” speech to Alicia Garza’s powerful “Black Lives Matter” message.

There are also paintings, more installations and photographs, some of which won the hotel’s photo competition. The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel

More than 400 works are on view at Portland’s The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel. Curated by Paige Powell, a former Andy Warhol confidante, the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended property’s collection has pieces from the likes of painter Chris Johanson, cartoonist John Callahan, filmmaker Gus Van Sant and emerging artist Nell Warren. A 35-foot hanging masterpiece, Bird Song by Melody Owen, is the grand stairwell chandelier. The work uses glass, LEDs and steel to illustrate the audio waves of bird songs native to the Pacific Northwest. It’s a breathtaking and original piece.

The Nines has also partnered with the Pacific Northwest College of Art to create abstract monotypes and silkscreen images throughout the guest rooms.

Shutters on the Beach

Santa Monica’s Shutters on the Beach is a Four-Star getaway that feels more like a luxury beach house than a traditional hotel. With that vibe, it boasts a 28-piece collection of contemporary art curated by fine art adviser Cynthia Greenwald. Works from such luminaries as Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney are on view in the lobby, hallways and other public spaces.

One of Greenwald’s recent acquisitions, Coca-Cola Girl 1 by New York Pop artist Alex Katz, is displayed near the sundry shop. It’s a painting of a blond in a white swimsuit against a red backdrop that sparks thoughts of a leisurely afternoon at the beach. Much of the artwork exudes this same carefreeness, mirroring the beauty of the Southern California coast.

Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C.

Significant works by Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Fernando Botero and more are on view at this Five-Star gem in Georgetown. DTR Modern Galleries’ Jennie Buehler curated the 1,650-piece art collection, which includes modern acquisitions like Red Pears, a lush print by Northern Virginia-based painter Tanya Davis, and Paul Chojnowski’s Windows, a piece made by burning images into wood and paper.

Another head-turner in the lobby is Julia, Sara, Gary, Tiffany, Fabiana by Roni Stretch. The black and white portraits, covered in layers of opaque paint, converge to form images that are ghostly yet provocative.
